About Learn Thai For Free
Made in Chiang Mai, Thailand
What it is
Learn Thai For Free is a free online course and app for English speakers. It teaches spoken Central Thai from your first สวัสดีsà-wàt-dii to real conversations, with audio for every word, the Thai alphabet, tones, songs, culture and AI speaking practice. There's no paywall, and you can start a lesson without signing up.
Who makes it
Learn Thai For Free is made in Chiang Mai by learners who wanted the app they couldn't find: free, modern and serious about tones. We use Thai every day, at the market, in Grab cars and with Thai friends, and that is the Thai the course teaches: polite, natural and useful from day one.
It's an independent project. We don't sell courses, tutoring or your data, and every lesson is free.
How the course is made
-
A real curriculum
Three stages from A1 to B1, built around life in Thailand. Each unit teaches useful chunks first and one grammar pattern, with a story, a dialogue and a role-play, then spaced review brings everything back before you forget it.
-
Audio checked for tones
The audio is made with AI voices. Every clip is checked automatically before it goes live: it is transcribed to confirm the right words, and judged for the right tones. Clips that fail are made again.
-
Reviewed by native speakers
Lessons are written in natural, polite modern Thai and reviewed by native Thai speakers, with notes where Chiang Mai or Isan Thai differs from Bangkok Thai.
-
Tones you can see
Every romanized syllable carries its tone mark, in one consistent system, and you can switch to Thai script only or romanization only whenever you like.
Is it really free?
Yes. The course, the Thai alphabet and tones lessons, songs, culture lessons and the tools on this site are free. The AI features (speech feedback and conversations) cost us money to run, so they have fair daily limits, which keeps them free for everyone. Your progress is saved automatically; sign in with Google any time to keep it on all your devices.
Found a mistake?
Thai is subtle and we will sometimes get things wrong. In a lesson, tap the flag on the answer screen to report a problem; anywhere else, email us. We read every message, and corrections from native speakers and teachers are especially welcome.
