Thai level test

How much Thai do you know? This free test checks your listening, words, everyday sentences and tones (and your reading, if you like), then shows where to start in the course, from A1 to B1.

About this test

The Learn Thai For Free level test is a free, adaptive placement test for Thai learners. In up to 30 short questions it estimates which of the course’s 24 units (A1 to B1) you already know, and where you should start. Questions get harder after right answers and easier after wrong ones, and answering “I don’t know” keeps the result accurate.

What the test checks

Real course material with audio for every word: the same words and sentences you would learn in each unit.

  • ListeningHear a word or an everyday sentence and pick what it means.
  • WordsSee a word in English and pick the right Thai.
  • SentencesUnderstand what people say at the market, in a Grab, at the clinic and beyond.
  • TonesFurther into the course: hear one word of a tone pair and pick which one it was.
  • Reading (if you like)A few words in Thai script without romanization, to find where to start reading lessons.

How the test works

  1. 1 It adapts to youIt starts among the beginner units, moves up after right answers and down after wrong ones: two or three questions per unit.
  2. 2 Say “I don’t know” when you don’tIt is always there. A lucky guess would send you to lessons that are too hard; an honest “I don’t know” keeps the result right.
  3. 3 It stops when it’s sureUsually after 10 to 25 questions, in 3 to 5 minutes. There is no timer.
  4. 4 You get a unit to start atStart there, or pick a lower unit. Nothing changes until you choose.

  • Retake it any timeFrom the Learn tab or the settings. A retake can move you further ahead and never removes lessons you have done.

Questions about the test

Is the Thai level test free?

Yes, like the whole course. You don’t need an account: your result is saved with your progress in this browser, and signing in keeps it on all your devices.

How long does the test take?

Usually 3 to 5 minutes and never more than 30 questions. If you are just starting out it ends sooner, as soon as it is sure.

What do A1, A2 and B1 mean?

They are levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). A1 is survival Thai: greetings, food, prices and directions. A2 is daily life on your own: markets, the clinic, making plans and talking about your day. B1 is real conversation: telling stories, giving opinions and sorting out problems. The course covers A1 to B1 in 24 units.

I can’t read Thai script. Can I still take the test?

Yes. The questions show romanization next to the Thai (unless you chose to hide or fade it in the app), and the reading check at the end is optional.

How accurate is the result?

It is a quick estimate that aims to place you within one unit of your level. When it is unsure it places you a little lower rather than too high, and the reviews of the words you skipped soon show what you really know. You can always open any unit.

Can I take the test again?

Yes. A retake can move your starting point further ahead. It never deletes progress: lessons you have done stay done.
