How Thais write and say dates
Day first, then the month, then the Buddhist year: the same order as in Britain, with a different year.
| Style | 13 October 2026 | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Official | วันอังคารที่ 13 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2569 | letters, contracts, announcements |
| Everyday | 13 ตุลาคม 2569 | news, invitations, posters |
| Short | 13 ต.ค. 69 | receipts, bank slips, chats |
| Numbers | 13/10/2569 | forms and documents |
Saying the date
วันที่wan-tîi + number + month: วันที่สิบสามตุลาคมwan-tîi sìp-sǎam dtù-laa-kom. In conversation the month loses its ending, as in ตุลาdtù-laa, and the year is left out. Ask with วันนี้วันที่เท่าไหร่wan-níi wan-tîi tâo-rài.
Reading the year
A year is read as one big number: 2569 is สองพันห้าร้อยหกสิบเก้าsǎwng-pan-hâa-ráwy-hòk-sìp-gâao. The letters พ.ศ. are read พอศอpaw-sǎw. Short forms use the last two digits: 69 is 2569.
Month abbreviations
Each month has a short form with dots: ม.ค. January, เม.ย. April, ต.ค. October, ธ.ค. December. All twelve are on months in Thai.
Thai digits
Most dates use 0-9, but official papers, temples and some calendars use Thai digits: ๑๓ ต.ค. ๒๕๖๙ is 13 Oct 2569. Learn them on Thai numbers.
Watch the year on labels: an expiry date can be printed in either calendar, so 69 and 26 may mean the same year. A Western year in Thai text gets ค.ศ.kaw-sǎw in front: ค.ศ. 2026.
Why the Thai year is 543 years ahead
The Buddhist Era, พุทธศักราชpút-tá-sàk-gà-ràat or พ.ศ. for short, counts the years since the Buddha's passing, which Thai tradition puts 543 years before the first year of the Western calendar. Other Buddhist countries such as Sri Lanka and Myanmar count from a year earlier, so their Buddhist year can be one higher.
In 1912 King Vajiravudh decreed that from April 1913 Thailand would count its years in the Buddhist Era. The year then began on 1 April, until a law of 1940 moved New Year's Day to 1 January from 1941. That left พ.ศ. 2483 only nine months long, from April to December 1940. So for a date in January to March before 1941, the difference is 542, not 543: the date tool above takes care of this.
Public holidays in Thailand, 2026 and 2027
Every date comes from the Bank of Thailand's official lists or the government's announcements, with the sources under each year. When a holiday falls on a weekend, the next working day is a substitute day off.
Next public holiday: Chulalongkorn Day, Fri 23 Oct (in 9 days).

The Bank of Thailand's list is official, lunar holidays included. Government offices also close on Buddhist Lent Day and on the day of the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, which the palace hasn't announced yet. Lent Day falls on the banks' substitute day for Asanha Bucha, so government offices will probably get Tuesday 20 July off as well: the Cabinet confirms its own list later in the year.

Banks follow the Bank of Thailand's list, and many companies follow it too. Government offices also close on Buddhist Lent Day and for the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, but not on Labour Day. Banks in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun and Songkhla also close for Chinese New Year and the two Eid festivals when these fall on a weekday. Shops, malls and restaurants stay open on most holidays, but on the big Buddhist days they don't sell alcohol.

The trick for remembering how long each month is, and the short forms Thais say, are on months in Thai.
The lunar calendar: Buddhist holy days and the animal years
Thai calendars also show the phases of the moon, because Buddhist holidays and some festivals follow them.
Buddhist holy days
วันพระwan-prá come four times a lunar month: on the 8th and the 15th day of the waxing moon, and on the 8th and the last day of the waning moon. Many people go to the temple to make merit, but they aren't days off.
The big Buddhist days
มาฆบูชาmaa-ká-buu-chaa, วิสาขบูชาwí-sǎa-kà-buu-chaa, อาสาฬหบูชาaa-sǎan-hà-buu-chaa and the start and end of Buddhist Lent follow the full moon, so their dates move every year. By law, shops and restaurants don't sell alcohol on these five days; only hotels, international airports and some licensed venues are exempt.
Chinese New Year
ตรุษจีนdtrùt-jiin fell on 17 February in 2026 and falls on 6 February in 2027. It isn't a national holiday, but Chinatowns celebrate for days, and banks in five southern provinces close for it when it falls on a weekday.
Festivals by the moon
Loy Krathong is on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, usually in November. Songkran is the exception: it used to follow the sun into Aries and now has fixed dates, 13 to 15 April. Read more in Thai culture.
The twelve animal years
Each year also has an animal, as in the Chinese zodiac, and Thais often answer “what year were you born?” with it. 2026 is ปีมะเมียbpii má-mia, the year of the horse. Thais don't all switch animals on the same day (1 January, Chinese New Year, Songkran or a day of the Thai lunar calendar), so a birthday early in the year can belong to either animal.

The Thai calendar: FAQ
What year is it in Thailand?
It is 2569 in the Thai calendar, the Buddhist Era (พ.ศ.), which runs 543 years ahead of the Western calendar: 2026 + 543 = 2569. Thai documents, newspapers and receipts use this year; the months and days are the same as in the West.
Why is the Thai year 543 years ahead?
The Buddhist Era counts from the Buddha’s passing, which Thai tradition places 543 years before year 1 of the Western calendar. It has been Thailand’s official count of years since 1913, and the year has started on 1 January since 1941.
How do I convert a Thai year to a Western year?
Subtract 543: 2569 − 543 = 2026. To go the other way, add 543. Only dates in January to March before 1941 need 542, because the Thai year began in April until 1940.
What is the Thai date format?
Day, month, year, with the Buddhist year: 13/10/2569 or 13 ต.ค. 69. Written out in full it is วันที่ 13 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2569, and on official papers the weekday comes first: วันอังคารที่ 13 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2569.
When is Thai New Year?
The official new year is 1 January, when the Buddhist year changes too. The traditional Thai New Year is Songkran, 13 to 15 April, the biggest holiday of the year.
Does Thailand use the Gregorian calendar?
Yes. The Thai solar calendar has the same months, days and leap years as the Gregorian calendar; only the year number differs. Buddhist holidays and festivals like Loy Krathong follow the lunar calendar, so their dates move from year to year.
