Count anything in Thai

Thai numbers: count from 1 to a million (with audio)

Ten words, three rules and two irregulars: that's all you need to count, pay and bargain in Thai. Hear every number, then type any number to see it in Thai.

Quick answer

Thai numbers 1-10 are หนึ่งnùeng, สองsǎwng, สามsǎam, สี่sìi, ห้าhâa, หกhòk, เจ็ดjèt, แปดbpàet, เก้าgâao and สิบsìp. Bigger numbers are built like English (สามสิบสองsǎam-sìp-sǎwng = 3 × 10 + 2 = 32), with two irregulars: 11 is สิบเอ็ดsìp-èt and 20 is ยี่สิบyîi-sìp.

11-20 and the two irregulars

Ten + the digit, except for two special forms you'll hear every day.

Rule 1 · เอ็ด

A 1 at the end of a longer number is เอ็ดèt, not หนึ่งnùeng: 11 = สิบเอ็ดsìp-èt, 21 = ยี่สิบเอ็ดyîi-sìp-èt, 101 = ร้อยเอ็ดráwy-èt.

Rule 2 · ยี่

A 2 in the tens is ยี่yîi, not สองsǎwng: 20 = ยี่สิบyîi-sìp, 25 = ยี่สิบห้าyîi-sìp-hâa. And 10 is just สิบsìp, never "one ten".

100 to a million: ร้อย, พัน, หมื่น, แสน, ล้าน

Thai has its own words for 10,000 and 100,000, so big numbers are read by Thai places, not English thousands.

NumberThaiEnglishAudio
10สิบ sìpten
100ร้อย ráwyhundred
1,000พัน panthousand
10,000หมื่น mùuenten thousand
100,000แสน sǎenhundred thousand
1,000,000ล้าน láanmillion

So 50,000 is ห้าหมื่นhâa-mùuen (five ten-thousands), and 250,000 is สองแสนห้าหมื่นsǎwng-sǎen-hâa-mùuen. Zeros are simply skipped, and everyday speech often drops the first หนึ่งnùeng: ร้อยห้าสิบráwy-hâa-sìp for 150.

Lucky and unlucky numbers

9 is the lucky number. เก้าgâao sounds like ก้าวgâao, "to step forward", so 9s are popular in phone numbers, licence plates and prices, and ceremonies are often set for an auspicious time like 9:09.

555 means "hahaha". Five is ห้าhâa, so 555 reads hâa hâa hâa. Thais type it in every chat.

6 is mixed. หกhòk also means "to spill" (and หกล้มhòk-lóm is "to fall over"), so some people avoid it in phone numbers and plates.

Thai numbers FAQ

How do you count to 10 in Thai?

Watch the tones: สี่ (four) is low, but สี (colour) is rising.

How do you say 11 and 20 in Thai?

11 is สิบเอ็ด (sìp-èt), not สิบหนึ่ง: a 1 at the end of a longer number becomes เอ็ด. 20 is ยี่สิบ (yîi-sìp), not สองสิบ: a 2 in the tens is ยี่. Everything else follows the pattern.

What are Thai numerals?

Thailand has its own digits: ๐ ๑ ๒ ๓ ๔ ๕ ๖ ๗ ๘ ๙. They work exactly like 0-9. Everyday life mostly uses Arabic digits, but you will see Thai ones on official documents, temple signs, some price tags and banknotes.

How do you say 100 and 1,000 in Thai?

100 is ร้อย (ráwy) or หนึ่งร้อย (nùeng-ráwy), 1,000 is พัน (pan) or หนึ่งพัน. Thai also has single words for 10,000 (หมื่น mùuen) and 100,000 (แสน sǎen), so 50,000 is ห้าหมื่น, "five ten-thousands".

Why do Thais type 555?

Because 5 is ห้า (hâa) in Thai, so 555 reads "hâa hâa hâa": hahaha. You will see it in every LINE chat and comment section.
