English words A to Z

How this dictionary works

Every entry starts from the English word people search for and gives the Thai that Thais really use, most common first. When there are several words, like ภรรยาpan-rá-yaa and เมียmia for wife, the entry explains which one fits where.

Thai is a tonal language, so every syllable of the romanization carries its tone, and each word has audio at normal and slow speed. Example sentences are natural, everyday Bangkok Thai, and you can tap any word in them to see what it means.

Questions about the dictionary

How do I search the dictionary?

Type an English word (cat), Thai script (แมวmaew) or the word as it sounds: tone marks are optional, so maew, maeo and meow all find it. Use the arrow keys and Enter to open a result.

What do the accents in the romanization mean?

They mark the tone of each syllable: no mark is mid, à low, â falling, á high and ǎ rising. หมาmǎa (dog) and ม้าmáa (horse) differ only in their tone. Our guide to Thai tones explains all five.

Is the audio a native speaker?

The audio is made with AI voices in standard Bangkok Thai, and every clip is checked for the right tones before it goes online. Each word has a normal and a slow version.

Is this dictionary free?

Yes. The dictionary, the course and the audio are free, with no sign-up needed. Words from the course link to the lesson that teaches them, so you can practise them right away.
