Body and health in Thai

Body words are among the first you need when something hurts. Thais describe pain with ปวดbpùat, a deep ache (ปวดหัวbpùat hǔa, a headache), or เจ็บjèp, a sharp or surface pain (เจ็บคอjèp kaw, a sore throat), followed by the body part.

Some body words also live in everyday expressions: ใจjai (heart, mind) appears in dozens of words like ใจดีjai-dii (kind), and หัวhǔa (head) gives หัวหน้าhǔa-nâa (boss).

At a pharmacy or clinic, naming the body part with ปวดbpùat or เจ็บjèp gets you surprisingly far.
