Foot in Thai

“Foot” in Thai is เท้าtáao; you'll also hear ตีนdtiin (crude).

เท้า táao

foot, feet noun

  • táao high
  • High: start high and go a little higher, a bit tense; don’t let it fall.

ตีน dtiin

foot (crude for people; normal for animals) noun

  • dtiin mid
  • Mid: level, in your normal speaking voice.

How to use it

เท้าtáao is the polite, everyday word for the foot, said high and long. ตีนdtiin is a crude word for a person's foot that you'll hear in rough speech, but it's normal for animals: chicken feet on a menu are ตีนไก่dtiin-gài.

Feet are the lowest part of the body, and Thai manners follow: don't point them at people or Buddha images, don't rest them on tables, and take your shoes off before you step into a home or a temple hall. See Thai etiquette.
