Formal and written Thai words
Written Thai has its own vocabulary. News, signs, forms and books are full of words you rarely hear in a chat with friends: ซึ่งsûeng (which), จึงjueng (therefore), สามารถsǎa-mâat (to be able to) and ได้รับdâi-ráp (to receive). Two small prefixes build thousands of nouns: การgaan for actions, as in การเดินทางgaan doen-taang (travel), and ความkwaam for qualities and feelings, as in ความสุขkwaam sùk (happiness).
Some formal words are also the polite way to speak: ทราบsâap (to know) and ทานtaan (to eat) are what staff say to customers, and what you'd say to your partner's parents.
Each entry says when a word is formal, what Thais say instead in everyday talk, and gives examples from signs, forms, apps and the news.
