Family words in Thai
Thai family words say more than English ones. Siblings are named by age: พี่pîi is an older brother or sister and น้องnáwng a younger one. Grandparents are named by side: your mother's parents are ยายyaai and ตาdtaa, your father's are ย่าyâa and ปู่bpùu.
The same words reach far beyond the family. Thais call a friendly vendor ป้าbpâa (auntie), a security guard ลุงlung (uncle) and a young waiter น้องnáwng, so using them well makes you sound warm and natural.
For partners there's a polite and a casual word: ภรรยาpan-rá-yaa and เมียmia for wife, สามีsǎa-mii and ผัวpǔa for husband. The entries explain when each one fits.
