Days of the week in Thai: FAQ

What is Monday in Thai?

วันจันทร์ (wan-jan). วัน means day and จันทร์ is the moon, so it is literally "moon day", just like Monday in English.

Why does each day have a colour in Thailand?

The colours come from Hindu astrology: each day belongs to a planetary god with his own colour. Many Thais know the colour of the day they were born on, and some still wear the day’s colour, especially yellow on Mondays.

How do you say "weekend" in Thai?

Most people say เสาร์อาทิตย์ (sǎo aa-tít), "Saturday Sunday". The formal word is สุดสัปดาห์ (sùt-sàp-daa), which you will see in writing.

How do you say "on Monday" in Thai?

Just the day, with no word for "on": วันจันทร์ไปทำงาน (on Monday I go to work). Add ทุก (túk) for "every": ทุกวันจันทร์, every Monday.

Is Thursday really that long?

Yes, วันพฤหัสบดี (wan-pá-rúe-hàt-sà-baw-dii) is a mouthful, so everyone says วันพฤหัส (wan-pá-rúe-hàt) in everyday speech.
