Thais shorten the long ฮิปโปโปเตมัสhíp-bpoo-bpoo-dtee-mát to ฮิปโปhíp-bpoo. The most famous hippo in the country is Moo Deng, หมูเด้งmǔu-dêng, "bouncy pork", a pygmy hippo born in July 2024 at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, who became a meme around the world.
