หนัง nǎng

film, movie; skin, leather noun

  • nǎng rising
  • Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”

How to use it

หนังnǎng is skin and hide, so it's leather too, and it's also the everyday word for a film: context tells you which. Real leather is หนังแท้nǎng táe, "genuine skin", and faux leather หนังเทียมnǎng tiam, "imitation skin". Market stalls sell a lot of the second, so feel it and ask. Pork skin is หนังหมูnǎng mǔu too: fried until it puffs up, it's the crunchy snack แคบหมูkâep-mǔu.
