How to use it

ถาวรtǎa-wawn is permanent, a slightly formal word, as in permanent residence. In conversation, staying for good is อยู่ยาวyùu yaao, "staying long", and forever is ตลอดไปdtà-làwt bpai. The idea that nothing lasts is at the heart of Buddhism: อนิจจังà-nít-jang, impermanence, a word you'll hear at funerals.
