Province in Thai

“Province” in Thai is จังหวัดjang-wàt.

จังหวัด jang-wàt

province noun

  • jang mid
  • wàt low
  • Low: flat and lower than your normal voice, dropping a little at the end.

How to use it

Thailand has 76 provinces plus Bangkok, which is run separately, so Thais usually say there are 77. Each province is named after its main town, so Chiang Mai is both a city and a province. Thais often ask which province you're from, บ้านอยู่จังหวัดอะไรbâan yùu jang-wàt à-rai, because home means the family's province, not where you live now.

Everywhere outside Bangkok is ต่างจังหวัดdtàang-jang-wàt, "other provinces".
