What the song is about
ถ่านไฟเก่าtàan fai gào, “Than Fai Kao (Old Flame)”, is a classic Thai song by Bird Thongchai McIntyre (1998). A ballad about loving someone whose ex has come back: 'don't worry, there's nothing going on', yet he can feel that the old embers are still hot. Its lines teach before me, as if…, something, to come back, to sympathise, don't worry, it's nothing, and the Thai idiom for an old flame.

The old embers are still hot
The title, in the chorus. ถ่านไฟเก่าtàan fai gào = an old flame, literally 'old embers' (ถ่านtàan = charcoal, ไฟfai = fire, เก่าgào = old): two people who were once a couple, and who, the Royal Society's dictionary says, fall for each other again easily when they meet again. ยังyang = still: ยังร้อนyang ráwn = still hot, so the fire can catch again.

The culture behind it
"ถ่านไฟเก่าtàan fai gào" is on Thongchai Service, Bird Thongchai McIntyre's ninth album, released by GMM Grammy on 6 August 1998; it sold about 1.47 million cassettes (Thai Wikipedia). The words and music are by the rock singer Thanapol Intharit, known as Seua, who moved to Grammy that year and wrote songs for its stars (Thai Wikipedia). The video opens with a short drama scene and a bet before the song begins; the singing starts at 0:55. Bird's Sabai Sabai, Khu Kat and Duai Rak Lae Phuk Phan are here too.
ถ่านไฟเก่าtàan fai gào is the kind of idiom Thais love: the picture is charcoal that has burned before and catches fire again easily, and so do old couples. It is just what a new partner worries about when an ex comes back, as the man in this song does.
