Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. วัน wanที่ผ่านมา tîi pàan maaไร้ ráiจุดหมาย jùt-mǎai

The days gone by, without a goal

The song looks back: life has passed the age of dreams. วันที่ผ่านมาwan tîi pàan maa = the days that have passed: after a time word, ที่ผ่านมาtîi pàan maa = past, last (ปีที่ผ่านมาbpii tîi pàan maa = the past year). ไร้rái = without, -less, a written ไม่มีmâi mii: ไร้สาระrái sǎa-rá = pointless, nonsense. จุดหมายjùt-mǎai = a goal, a destination.
  2. ตัว dtuaเป็น bpenของ kǎwngเรา raoใจ jaiของ kǎwngใคร krai

My body is my own, but whose is my heart?

The idea of the whole song: ตัวdtua, the body, the self that goes through the day, and ใจjai, the heart and mind, which may be somewhere else. (A tap on ตัวdtua shows its everyday job as a counting word, as in แมวสองตัวmaew sǎwng dtua, two cats.) เป็นของbpen kǎwng + someone = to belong to: นี่เป็นของฉันnîi bpen kǎwng chǎn = this is mine. ของใครkǎwng krai = whose: กระเป๋าของใครgrà-bpǎo kǎwng krai = whose bag is this? The song leaves out the verb: the heart, whose (is it)?
  3. อาจ àatหลงทาง lǒng taangไป bpaiไม่ mâiยากเย็น yâak-yen

It wouldn't take much to lose your way

The chorus: amid the bright lights of the city (ศิวิไลซ์sì-wí-lai, from English 'civilised'), you could lose your way, and easily. อาจàat = may, might. หลงทางlǒng taang = to get lost, to lose your way: ขอโทษครับผมหลงทางkǎw-tôot kráp pǒm lǒng taang = sorry, I'm lost. ไปbpai after it = gone astray. ยากเย็นyâak-yen = really hard, a stronger ยากyâak: ไม่ยากเย็นmâi yâak-yen = not hard at all.
  4. พอ pawอับโชค àp-chôokตก dtòkลง longกลาง glaangทะเล tá-leeใจ jai

When its luck runs out, it falls into the sea of the heart

The title line. Before it, a dreaming heart drifts like a little bird blown about by the wind. พอpaw + what happens = once, as soon as. อับโชคàp-chôok = to be out of luck (โชคchôok = luck: โชคดีchôok dii = good luck!). ตกลงdtòk long = to fall down, here two words, fall + down; written as one word, ตกลงdtòk-long means 'to agree, OK'. กลางglaang = the middle of: กลางทะเลglaang tá-lee = out in the middle of the sea. ทะเลใจtá-lee jai = the sea of the heart, the song's own image.
  5. หา hǎaหัวใจ hǔa-jaiให้ hâiเจอ joeก็ gâwเป็นสุข bpen-sùk

Find your heart, and you'll be happy

The end of the third verse, and the song's answer: every life searches for a goal, yet never finds the heart in its own body. หาhǎa = to look for; หา...ให้เจอhǎa … hâi joe = to look for something until you find it: หากุญแจให้เจอhǎa gun-jae hâi joe = find the keys! เจอjoe = to find, to meet. ก็gâw links the result: (then) you'll be… เป็นสุขbpen-sùk = to be happy, at peace.

Grammar in this song

หาhǎa … ให้เจอhâi joe = look for … until you find it. ให้hâi + a result after a verb says how it should end up: ทำให้เสร็จtam hâi sèt (get it done), พูดให้ชัดpûut hâi chát (speak clearly). ของใครkǎwng krai = whose: ใจของใครjai kǎwng krai, รถของใครrót kǎwng krai (whose car).

ไร้rái makes 'without' words, the written partner of ไม่มีmâi mii: ไร้จุดหมายrái jùt-mǎai (aimless), ไร้สาระrái sǎa-rá (nonsense). And the chorus turns on แพ้páe, to lose: some nights ใจแพ้ตัวjai páe dtua, the heart loses to the body, and on others ตัวแพ้ใจdtua páe jai, the body loses to the heart.

The culture behind it

"ทะเลใจtá-lee jai" was written and first sung by Aed Carabao (Yuenyong Opakul), the leader of Carabao, for พฤษภาprúet-sà-paa ('May'), an album he made in 1992 with his twin brother Eed (Yingyong Opakul). Aed has said he wrote it in half an hour, alone with a guitar in front of his house. It won best song at the Season Awards for 1992, and Carabao recorded it again in 2003; the official audio on Carabao's channel is the 1992 recording. Carabao's style is เพลงเพื่อชีวิตpleeng pûea chii-wít, 'songs for life', and this is one of its gentlest songs.

Aed explained the image like this: greed leads us to ruin, and happiness comes from getting past the wanting in our heart; it is inside us, yet as wide as the sea, too deep to fathom and too wide to cross, but whoever crosses it wins. It's the Buddhist idea Thais grow up with: suffering comes from craving, and peace from a calm heart. The song's word for it is ใจjai, heart and mind in one, which turns up in hundreds of Thai words: ใจดีjai-dii (kind), ใจเย็นjai-yen (calm), ใจร้อนjai-ráwn (hot-tempered).
