Tur Kue Kwam Fun (เธอคือความฝัน): meaning and key lines

Proudพราว

What the song is about

เธอคือความฝันtoe kuue kwaam-fǎn, “Tur Kue Kwam Fun (You're My Dream)”, is a classic Thai song by Proud (1995). A 1995 love song by the Thai band Proud: the girl he loves is a dream as far away as the stars, and one day it may come true. Its slow, clear lines teach dream, answer, to try, if only, once, and 'just the two of us', and a music-box version of it was heard in Only God Forgives and opens episode 6 of The White Lotus's Thailand season.

Grammar in this song

คือkuue or เป็นbpen? Both can be 'is'. คือkuue says what something is, an equals sign: เธอคือความฝันtoe kuue kwaam-fǎn (you are the dream), นี่คือแม่ผมnîi kuue mâe pǒm (this is my mother). เป็นbpen gives a role or a kind: เขาเป็นครูkǎo bpen kruu (he's a teacher).

ลองlawng + verb = to try (doing): ลองหาlawng hǎa (try looking for it), often with ดูduu at the end: ลองชิมดูlawng chim duu (taste it and see). สักsàk + a counter = just one, at least one: สักครั้งsàk kráng (just once), สักวันsàk wan (someday).

The culture behind it

Proud (พราวpraao) put out "เธอคือความฝันtoe kuue kwaam-fǎn" in 1995 on its first album, for the small label Eastern Sky; for that album the band drew on British rock and new wave, from The Police and The Cure to Depeche Mode (Thai Wikipedia). The words are by Surachai Kitkasemsin and the music by Jettamon Malayota (the video's credits).

The song has had a second life on screen. The Thai film Happy Birthday (2008) used it (Thai Wikipedia), and its music-box version, which Proud released in 1996, closes the soundtrack album of Only God Forgives (2013), Nicolas Winding Refn's Bangkok thriller with Ryan Gosling, and played under its trailer (Chiang Mai Citylife; HitFix). In March 2025 that music-box version opened episode 6 of HBO's The White Lotus, 'Denials', at dawn after the full-moon party (Lifestyle Asia; Tunefind). A music lecturer wondered to Thai PBS whether the show simply chose a song about dreams because its characters were asleep.
