How names are written in Thai

Thai has no official alphabet for foreign names, so names are written by how they sound in English. A few habits make most spellings predictable:

  • The "a" in Sam or Jack is written with แae: แซมsaem, แจ็คjáek.
  • An English "r" after a vowel is written but silent, with the mark ◌์gaa-ran: Mark is มาร์คmâak and Peter ปีเตอร์bpii-dtôe.
  • Letters that a Thai syllable can't end with also get ◌์gaa-ran: James is เจมส์jeem and Alex อเล็กซ์à-lék.
  • Thai syllables end in only a few sounds: a final l sounds like n (Paul, พอลpawn) and a final s like t (Chris, คริสkrít).
  • A final "-a" or "-y" often gets a tone mark, which gives the falling tone Thais hear in English: Emma is เอมม่าeem-mâa and Lucy ลูซี่luu-sîi.
  • Names that start with a vowel are written on the silent letter อaw: Oliver is โอลิเวอร์oo-lí-wôe.

Questions people ask

How do I write my name in Thai?

Type it in the box at the top of this page. Thais write foreign names by how they sound, not letter by letter, so the tool works from the English pronunciation: Michael becomes ไมเคิลmai-koen and Sarah ซาร่าsaa-râa. If your name is pronounced in an unusual way, type it the way it sounds.

Why do I see different Thai spellings of my name?

Thai has several letters for some sounds (ทtaw, ธtaw and ถtǎw all sound like t) and everyday spelling of foreign names isn't fixed. The Royal Institute publishes rules for transcribing English words, but shops, newspapers and passports don't always follow them. Sarah, for example, is written both ซาร่าsaa-râa and ซาราห์saa-raa.

Does Thai have capital letters?

No. Thai script has no upper and lower case, so names look like any other word. Thai writes a space between a first name and a surname, but not between the syllables of one name.

Can I get a Thai name or nickname?

Thais themselves use short nicknames every day, and Thai friends often give foreigners one. Our guide to Thai nicknames explains how they work, and Thai names explained covers first names and surnames.
