How to use it

เด็กทารกdèk-taa-rók is the standard word for a baby, shortened to ทารกtaa-rók by doctors and the news. Shops sell baby products as ของเด็กอ่อนkǎwng dèk-àwn, and in cute talk a baby is a เบบี๋bee-bǐi.

In conversation Thais rarely need any of these: someone's baby is their ลูกlûuk, and adults talk to and about any baby as น้องnáwng: น้องกี่เดือนแล้วnáwng gìi duean láew, how many months old is the baby?
