Countryside in Thai
“Countryside” in Thai is ชนบทchon-ná-bòt; you'll also hear บ้านนอกbâan-nâwk (casual).
countryside, rural area noun
- chon mid
- ná high
- bòt low
- High: start high and go a little higher, a bit tense; don’t let it fall.
- Low: flat and lower than your normal voice, dropping a little at the end.
the countryside, back home in the village (casual; can sound snobbish) noun
- bâan falling
- nâwk falling
- Falling: start high and drop clearly, like a firm “No!”
How to use it
ชนบทchon-ná-bòt is the neutral word for rural Thailand. In conversation people more often say ต่างจังหวัดdtàang-jang-wàt, "the provinces", or, casually, บ้านนอกbâan-nâwk, literally "outer villages". Said about your own home village it's warm, but calling someone บ้านนอกbâan-nâwk means they're a country bumpkin.
At Songkran, millions of people who work in Bangkok go back to their home provinces, and the city empties.
