Evil in Thai

“Evil” in Thai is ชั่วchûa.

ชั่ว chûa

evil, wicked, bad adjective

  • chûa falling
  • Falling: start high and drop clearly, like a firm “No!”

How to use it

ชั่วchûa is morally bad, wicked: the villain of a TV drama is a คนชั่วkon chûa. The saying ทำดีได้ดีทำชั่วได้ชั่วtam dii dâi dii tam chûa dâi chûa, "do good, get good; do evil, get evil", sums up the Buddhist idea of karma, กรรมgam, that Thai children grow up with. In everyday complaints Thais more often say ร้ายráai or เลวlew. The same syllable starts ชั่วโมงchûa-moong, an hour.
