How to use it

วันหยุดwan-yùt, a "stopping day", is any day off: the weekend, a public holiday or your own day off. Thailand has many public holidays, for Buddhist days, royal anniversaries, New Year and Songkran, and when one falls next to a weekend the result is a วันหยุดยาวwan-yùt-yaao, a long weekend: buses fill up, hotels raise their prices and the roads out of Bangkok jam. On some Buddhist holidays, shops aren't allowed to sell alcohol.

Time off for a trip is something else: see vacation.
