How to use it

Thai schools are known for rote learning, ท่องจำtâwng-jam, "recite and remember": children chant the alphabet, กไก่gaw gài, and the times tables, สูตรคูณsùut-kuun, until they stick. In everyday talk the verb is just ท่องtâwng, to go over something out loud, as in ท่องคำศัพท์tâwng kam-sàp, to learn your vocabulary. Remembering is จำjam, and knowing something by heart is จำได้ขึ้นใจjam dâi kûen-jai.
