Old-fashioned in Thai

“Old-fashioned” in Thai is เชยchoei.

เชย choei

old-fashioned, uncool, corny adjective

  • choei mid
  • Mid: level, in your normal speaking voice.

How to use it

เชยchoei is a light, teasing word for anything out of date: old clothes, a corny joke, a parent who doesn't know the latest slang. Thais happily say it about themselves: เชยจังchoei jang, "how uncool of me". Don't confuse it with เฉยๆchǒei-chǒei, with a rising tone, which means so-so, nothing special.

Don't mix it up

  • เฉยๆchǒei-chǒei

    so-so, nothing special

Rising tone, said twice: meh, nothing special.
