Cool (stylish) in Thai

“Cool (stylish)” in Thai is เท่têe; you'll also hear เจ๋งjěng (awesome).

เท่ têe

cool, stylish adjective

  • têe falling
  • Falling: start high and drop clearly, like a firm “No!”

เจ๋ง jěng

cool, awesome (casual) adjective

  • jěng rising
  • Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”

How to use it

เท่têe is cool in the stylish sense: a leather jacket, a vintage motorbike, someone who plays guitar on the beach. เจ๋งjěng is cool as in awesome, for ideas, gadgets and plans. Cool weather is a different word, เย็นyen, and a cool, calm person is ใจเย็นjai-yen. Slang ages fast, and older words for cool, like เฟี้ยวfíaw and จ๊าบjáap, now sound dated.
