How to say “handsome” in Thai
The short answer
Handsome in Thai is หล่อlàw, said with a low tone. หล่อมากlàw mâak means "very handsome", หล่อจังlàw jang is "so handsome!", and "you're handsome" is คุณหล่อมากkun làw mâak. For style and attitude rather than looks, Thais say เท่têe, "cool". Good-looking men are often called น่ารักnâa-rák (cute) too, which is just as much a compliment.

Lor: handsome
หล่อlàw is the standard word for a good-looking man, and Thais use it generously: for a groom, a friend in a new shirt, a K-pop idol on a poster, a little boy in his school uniform. It sounds like the English word "law" said on a low, flat pitch. Spellings like lor and lo are the same word; there's no l or r at the end.
A small script fact: the first letter of หล่อlàw is a silent h. It isn't pronounced; it only changes the tone, which is why the word is low and not falling.
Compliments are part of daily life
Thais compliment each other's looks easily and often, so don't be surprised if a market vendor or a friend's auntie calls you หล่อlàw and laughs. It's friendly teasing (and sometimes good business). Take it with a smile, a ขอบคุณkàwp-kun, or the modest ไม่หรอกmâi ràwk ("not really"). If you want to be cheeky, รู้แล้วrúu láew ("I know!") always gets a laugh.
Lor, tae, na rak or suay?
- หล่อlàw: handsome, about looks. Said of a woman, it means she has a cool, boyish style.
- เท่têe: cool, stylish, about attitude and look together.
- น่ารักnâa-rák: cute, sweet. A big compliment for a man too, often about his personality.
- สวยsǔay: beautiful, for women and things. Calling a man สวยsǔay is usually a joke.
Complimenting without being awkward
A compliment on something specific always lands well: ผมทรงใหม่หล่อดีpǒm song mài làw dii ("the new haircut looks great") or เสื้อตัวนี้เท่มากsûea dtua níi têe mâak ("this shirt looks really cool"). Note that ผมpǒm here means hair: the same word as the male "I", with the same rising tone.
Pronunciation
One long syllable, làw, on a low, level pitch, with the "aw" of "law". Don't let it rise like an English question. Tone matters here: ล้อláw, with a high tone, means "to tease" (and also "a wheel"), so a friend who says หล่อlàw and then laughs might be doing a bit of both.
