How to say “beautiful” in Thai
The short answer
Beautiful in Thai is สวยsǔay, said with a rising tone. สวยมากsǔay mâak means "very beautiful", and คุณสวยมากkun sǔay mâak is "you're very beautiful". It works for people, places, clothes and views. For "pretty" in the sense of sweet or cute, Thais often prefer น่ารักnâa-rák, and a good-looking man is หล่อlàw, handsome.

Say it right: suay, not "sway"
สวยsǔay is one syllable: an "s", then the vowel of "tour" gliding into a y, said with a rising tone (start low, finish high, like a surprised question). Spellings like suay, suai and soo-ay are all trying to capture this.
The tone really matters here. Say it flat and level and you get ซวยsuay, which means "unlucky" or "damn, bad luck". So คุณสวยมากkun sǔay mâak is "you're very beautiful", but with a flat tone it sounds like "you're very unlucky". Thais will usually get what you meant, and laugh.
Compliments, Thai style
Thais compliment often and casually: on a new haircut, a dress, a photo, even your handwriting. สวยจังsǔay jang and น่ารักจังnâa-rák jang are everyday words among friends and colleagues, not just flirting. Comments on looks can be very direct, and you'll see fair skin (ผิวขาวpǐu kǎao) praised in every skincare advert.
Taking a compliment is a little art. A proud "thank you" can sound immodest, so Thais often deflect with a laugh and ไม่หรอกmâi ràwk ("oh, not really"), or tease back with ปากหวานbpàak wǎan, "sweet talker". A smile and ขอบคุณkàwp-kun is always fine for a foreigner.
Suay, na rak or lor?
- สวยsǔay: beautiful, for women, places, things, photos and views.
- น่ารักnâa-rák: cute, sweet, lovable, for people, children, pets and kind gestures. Calling someone น่ารักnâa-rák often praises their personality as much as their looks.
- หล่อlàw: handsome, for men. Said of a woman, it means she has a cool, boyish style.
Use สวยsǔay for anything pleasing to the eye: วิวสวยwiu sǔay (a beautiful view), ลายมือสวยlaai-muue sǔay (nice handwriting), ถ่ายรูปสวยtàai rûup sǔay (to take good photos). For good weather, though, Thais say อากาศดีaa-gàat dii, not "beautiful weather".
Common mistakes
- A flat tone: ซวยsuay (unlucky) instead of สวยsǔay (beautiful). Let it rise.
- Calling a man สวยsǔay. It means "pretty", so it's a joke unless that's what you mean; use หล่อlàw.
- Using it as a pickup line on strangers. สวยมากsǔay mâak to a waitress you don't know can feel awkward; praise the food, the shop or the view instead, and save personal compliments for people you've actually talked to.
