What the song is about

อื้อฮือหล่อจังûue-huue làw jang, “Ue Hue Lo Jang (Wow, So Handsome)”, is a luk thung song by Pumpuang Duangjan (1985). One of the cheeky hits that made Pumpuang Duangjan the queen of luk thung, by the songwriter Lop Burirat. A woman spots a handsome, muscular stranger and can't stop gushing, so it's A2 Thai you can use (handsome, polite, single, lonely, whose boyfriend?) with the exclamations Thais really say.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

    He looks well-mannered.

ดูduu (to look) + description = to look, to seem; ดูท่าทางduu tâa-taang + description = to look (as if), from the way someone carries himself: ดูท่าทางใจดีduu tâa-taang jai-dii = he looks kind. สุภาพsù-pâap = polite, courteous, well-mannered.

He's single, right? I'd like to know.

โสดsòot = single. Statement + ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi = …, right?, when you expect a yes. ทราบsâap is the polite, formal word for รู้rúu (to know): อยากทราบyàak sâap = I'd like to know, as a hotel desk would say it, which makes her nosy question sound very proper.

…that right now I feel so lonely.

ว่าwâa = that, after verbs of saying and thinking. ตอนนี้dtawn-níi = right now. เหงาngǎo = lonely; เหงาใจngǎo jai = lonely at heart. จังเลยjang loei at the end = so…!, a gushing, very spoken 'very'.

Whose boyfriend is this, I wonder?

ของใครkǎwng krai = whose (literally 'of who'). กันgan after a question word adds 'I wonder': ใครกันkrai gan = who on earth? เอ่ยòei is an old, teasing question particle, as in riddles. นี่nîi = this one here.

Wow, he's so handsome! Aha, really handsome!

The hook, as the song ends on it. อื้อฮือûue-huue = wow!, อะฮ้าà-háa = aha! หล่อlàw = handsome (for men; for women say สวยsǔay). Description + จังjang = so…!, + จริงjing = really… Thai leaves out 'he' when it's clear who you mean.

Grammar in this song

So…!: description + จังjang, จริงjing or จังเลยjang loei. หล่อจังlàw jang = so handsome!, หล่อจริงlàw jing = really handsome, เหงาใจจังเลยngǎo jai jang loei = so lonely! All three are casual; มากmâak (very) is the neutral word.

Checking: statement + ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi. โสดใช่ไหมsòot châi mǎi = you're single, right? คนไทยใช่ไหมkon tai châi mǎi = you're Thai, aren't you? A plain ไหมmǎi question, โสดไหมsòot mǎi, asks without expecting either answer.

The culture behind it

Lop Burirat (1939–2016), whose real name, Wichian Kham-charoen, is the one on the video's title card, wrote this song. He was later named a National Artist. From 1982 he turned Pumpuang Duangjan to fun, upbeat songs, and hits like this one, the title song of her 1985 album, made her the queen of luk thung. Here she plays a woman who can't take her eyes off a muscular stranger and daydreams about getting close to him: the woman does the admiring, and she says so out loud.

The video is a clip from the 1980s: Pumpuang singing in a studio, cut with shots of a young man in a white shirt and tie, with the words on screen for karaoke. The exclamations are worth stealing: อื้อฮือûue-huue or อู้ฮู้ûu-húu for wow and อะฮ้าà-háa for aha, said with a big smile.
