Tod Wela Bad Jeb (ทดเวลาบาดเจ็บ): meaning and key lines

What the song is about

ทดเวลาบาดเจ็บtót wee-laa bàat-jèp, “Tod Wela Bad Jeb (Injury Time)”, is a luk thung song by Boy Phanomphrai (2017). From the Isan film Thai Baan The Series, it won Best Original Song at Thailand's national film awards, and by 2026 it was among the ten most-watched music videos by Thai artists on YouTube: a man who was first team in his girlfriend's heart is subbed off for a new guy and begs for injury time. The football runs through the whole song, so it teaches football words (a first-team player, a goal, the pitch, injury time) along with the Isan words for what, do, hurry and dump.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. อ้าย âaiเคย koeiเป็น bpenตัวจริง dtua-jingใน naiใจ jaiของ kǎwngน้อง náwng

I used to be first team in your heart.

เคยkoei + verb = used to: เคยเป็นkoei bpen = used to be. ตัวจริงdtua-jing, literally 'the real one', is a first-team player, a starter, and in love the real, main partner; the next line says the other man was only a substitute on the bench. อ้ายâai (older brother) is the man, 'I', and น้องnáwng (the younger one) is the woman, 'you': the pair of names Isan couples use.
  2. เกิด gòetอีหยัง ii-yǎngขึ้น kûenน้อ náwเจ้า jâoจัง jangลด lótราคา raa-kaa

What happened, that you marked me down?

เกิดอะไรขึ้นgòet à-rai kûen = what happened? (เกิดgòet, to be born, also means 'to arise, to happen'). Isan says อีหยังii-yǎng for อะไรà-rai, and น้อnáw makes it gentle. เจ้าjâo = you (Isan). Isan จังjang (also written จั่งjàng) works like Central ถึงtǔeng, 'so that': เจ้าจังลดราคาjâo jang lót raa-kaa = that you'd cut the price. ลดราคาlót raa-kaa = to reduce the price, a shop word: he's been marked down like something on sale.
  3. สุดท้าย sùt-táaiเฮ็ด hétประตู bprà-dtuuบ่ bàwได้ dâi

In the end I couldn't score.

Just before this, she fooled him into giving it everything. สุดท้ายsùt-táai = in the end. Isan เฮ็ดhét = ทำtam, to do, and ประตูbprà-dtuu, a door, is also a goal: ทำประตูtam bprà-dtuu = to score. บ่ได้bàw dâi (Central ไม่ได้mâi dâi) after a verb = can't, couldn't: ทำไม่ได้tam mâi dâi = I can't do it.
  4. ทด tótได้ dâiบ่ bàwทด tótเวลา wee-laaอีก ìikแน naeได้ dâiบ่ bàw

Can you add time? Can you give me a little more time?

ได้บ่dâi bàw at the end = Central ได้ไหมdâi mǎi, can you? ทดtót = to add on: ทดเวลาtót wee-laa is what a referee does, add time to a game. อีกìik = more; Isan แนnae = หน่อยnàwy, a little, which also makes a request softer: อีกแนìik nae = a little more.
  5. ทดเวลาบาดเจ็บ tót wee-laa bàat-jèpให้ hâiอ้าย âaiยืน yuuenใน naiสนาม sà-nǎamใจ jai

Injury time! Let me stay on the field of your heart.

The title. ทดเวลาบาดเจ็บtót wee-laa bàat-jèp = injury time, the minutes a referee adds at the end of a football match (บาดเจ็บbàat-jèp = injured). ให้hâi + person + verb = to let someone do something: ให้อ้ายยืนhâi âai yuuen = let me stand. สนามsà-nǎam = a field, a pitch: สนามใจsà-nǎam jai = the field of your heart.
  6. อย่า yàaฟ้าว fáaoถิ่ม tìmอ้าย âaiได้ dâiบ่ bàwฟัง fangคำขอ kam-kǎwอ้าย âaiก่อน gàwn

Please don't rush to dump me. Hear me out first.

    อย่าyàa + verb = don't. Isan → Central: ฟ้าวfáao = รีบrîip, to hurry, so อย่าฟ้าวyàa fáao = don't rush to…; ถิ่มtìm = ทิ้งtíng, to dump, to leave. ได้บ่dâi bàw after a 'don't' makes it a plea: please don't. ฟังfang = to listen; คำขอkam-kǎw = a request; ก่อนgàwn at the end = first.

Grammar in this song

Football as love. The song tells a break-up in football words: ตัวจริงdtua-jing (first team) and ตัวสำรองdtua sǎm-rawng (a substitute), เปลี่ยนตัวbplìan dtua (to substitute a player), ทำประตูtam bprà-dtuu (to score), สนามsà-nǎam (the pitch), จบเกมjòp geem (the end of the game) and ทดเวลาบาดเจ็บtót wee-laa bàat-jèp (injury time). Thai football fans use all of them.

Asking in Isan. ได้บ่dâi bàw = ได้ไหมdâi mǎi, can you?, and Isan แนnae softens it like หน่อยnàwy: ทดเวลาอีกแนได้บ่tót wee-laa ìik nae dâi bàw = could you add a little more time? With อย่าyàa it becomes a plea: อย่าฟ้าวไปได้บ่yàa fáao bpai dâi bàw = please don't go yet. The romanization reads Isan words as their spelling would sound in Central Thai; real Isan tones differ, so copy the singer.

Used to. เคยkoei + verb = used to, did once: เคยเป็นkoei bpen (used to be), เคยอยู่ที่นี่koei yùu tîi nîi (I used to live here).

The culture behind it

Boy Phanomphrai (บอยพนมไพรbawy pá-nom-prai) is named after his home district, Phanom Phrai in Roi Et. Sanook Music tells his story: a photographer, Thoedkiat Noimala, he told his own heartbreak to the songwriter Toey Athibodin, and the song that came of it, 'Status Thuek Thim' ('Status: Dumped'), was such a hit that the director of Thai Baan The Series (ไทบ้านtai-bâan, 'villagers') put it in his film and had Boy sing more songs for it. The film, a romantic comedy about young people in an Isan village directed by Surasak Pongson, opened in February 2017, and this song, also by Toey Athibodin, won Best Original Song at the Suphannahong National Film Awards in 2018.

Thai Baan grew into a whole series of Isan films, including The Undertaker (2023), which according to Thai Wikipedia took some 730 million baht at the box office. Thais are keen football fans, so every listener gets the joke: he isn't dumped, he's subbed off.
