Where the word 'love' is born, and with whom, doesn't matter.

    Isan → Central: ฮักhák = รักrák (love), ไผpǎi = ใครkrai (who), บ่bàw = ไม่mâi (not). Isan often has ฮhaw (h) where Central Thai has รraw (r). คำว่าkam wâa X = 'the word X'.

    Isan → Central: บ่มีอีหยังbàw mii ii-yǎng = ไม่มีอะไรmâi mii à-rai (nothing), ความฮักkwaam-hák = ความรักkwaam-rák (love). เฮาสองhao sǎwng = the two of us. Verb + ลงได้long dâi = can bring down.

All I ask is that you remember me: in any lifetime, I'll wait for you.

The last line switches to Central Thai (เธอtoe, ฉันchǎn). จำjam + someone + ได้dâi = to remember / recognise someone. Question word + ก็gâw = any… at all: ชาติไหนก็châat nǎi gâw = in whichever life. ชาติchâat = a lifetime, from the belief in rebirth.

Grammar in this song

Isan (ภาษาอีสานpaa-sǎa ii-sǎan, close to Lao) shares most grammar with Central Thai, so many lines swap only a few words: บ่bàw for ไม่mâi, สิsì for จะjà, ไผpǎi for ใครkrai, อีหยังii-yǎng for อะไรà-rai, เฮาhao for เราrao. There is also a sound shift: Central รraw (r) often becomes ฮhaw (h) in Isan (ฮักhák = รักrák, ฮู้húu = รู้rúu), and Central ชchaw (ch) often becomes ซsaw (s) (ซังsang = ชังchang, to hate). The official Thai subtitles on this video are a Central Thai translation, which makes a great side-by-side study aid.

From the Central Thai side: ทุกtúk + noun = every (ทุกถ้อยวาจาtúk tâwy-waa-jaa = every word), จำjam + person + ได้dâi = to remember someone, and question word + ก็gâw = any… at all (ชาติไหนก็รอchâat nǎi gâw raw = I'll wait in any lifetime).

The culture behind it

Kong Huayrai (real name Akkharadet Yodjampa, born 1987 in Wanon Niwat district, Sakon Nakhon) took his stage name from his home village, Ban Huay Rai. He wrote "คู่คองkûu-kawng" for Channel 3's 2016 fantasy drama นาคีnaa-kii (Nakee), about a naga, the sacred serpent of Mekong legend, who falls in love with a human, a love that breaks heaven's rules. He says he wrote it in about three hours one night after the naga king Pu Si Suttho (ปู่ศรีสุทโธbpùu sǐi-sùt-too), worshipped at Kham Chanot in Udon Thani, appeared in his dream. The video passed 100 million views in about two months, and the song won the Nataraja award for best drama song.

Isan, the northeast, is Thailand's largest region; its language is close to Lao. Millions of Isan people work in Bangkok and the rest of the country, so Isan songs play everywhere, and Isan words like บ่bàw and เว้าwáo are widely understood.
