How to use it

Thais say ใจเย็นๆjai yen-yen to calm someone down: a friend who panics, a driver losing his temper in traffic, a customer upset about a long wait. Said softly, often with นะná, it's kind and reassuring; snapped at someone who is already angry, it can sound like a telling-off.

Behind it is a real Thai value. Someone ใจเย็นjai-yen, "cool-hearted", stays patient and polite when things go wrong, while someone ใจร้อนjai-ráwn, "hot-hearted", loses their temper, and loses face with it. Our pages on saving face and sanuk, sabai and mai pen rai explain why it matters.
