How to use it

ใจร้อนjai-ráwn, "hot heart", is someone who can't wait and flares up quickly: honking in traffic, snapping at a slow waiter. In Thailand that's a real flaw, because staying calm saves everyone's face; the ideal is the opposite, ใจเย็นjai-yen, "cool heart". For someone who is angry right now, young Thais say หัวร้อนhǔa-ráwn, "hot head"; ใจร้อนjai-ráwn is more about temperament. Our page on saving face explains why it matters.
