“Question” in Thai is คำถามkam-tǎam.

คำถาม kam-tǎam

question noun

  • kam mid
  • tǎam rising
  • Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”
Parts: คำkam word ถามtǎam to ask

How to use it

คำถามkam-tǎam is a "word of asking", and its partner is คำตอบkam-dtàwp, an answer. To ask a question is ถามtǎam. In Thai classrooms students often keep their questions for after class rather than ask in front of everyone, out of เกรงใจgreeng-jai, so a teacher's มีคำถามไหมmii kam-tǎam mǎi can meet silence.
