How to use it

ตะกร้อdtà-grâw is a small woven ball, once made of rattan and now mostly of plastic, and the game played with it: you เตะdtè, kick, it and may use your feet, knees, chest and head, but never your hands. Over a net, as in volleyball, it's an Asian Games sport with spectacular overhead kicks; in a circle in a temple yard or a car park, friends simply keep the ball in the air. The international name joins Malay sepak, kick, with the Thai word.

In the kitchen, the same word is a whisk: ตะกร้อตีไข่dtà-grâw dtii kài.
