What the song is about

ความรักkwaam-rák, “Love (Kwam Rak)”, is a Thai rock song by Bodyslam (2010). A rock ballad about a love that ended: he still loves her as much as ever and regrets nothing, but life has to go on. Its chorus holds one of the most useful patterns in Thai, however much… just as much, plus used to, once, until, even though, and if I could turn back time.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. วัน wanที่ tîiคำ kamว่า wâaรัก rákมัน manได้ dâiผลัก plàkฉัน chǎnล้มลง lóm long

The day the word 'love' knocked me down

วันที่wan tîi… = the day (that)… คำว่าkam wâa + a word = the word…: คำว่ารักkam wâa rák = the word 'love'. ผลักplàk = to push; ล้มลงlóm long = to fall down: ผลักฉันล้มลงplàk chǎn lóm long = push me over. ได้dâi before a verb here stresses that it really happened, and มันman (it) points back at love.
  2. พอ pawน้ำตา náam-dtaaมัน manไหล lǎiจน jonไม่ mâiมี miiเหลือ lǔeaอยู่ yùu

Once my tears had flowed until there were none left

พอpaw + what happens = once, as soon as: พอฝนหยุดpaw fǒn yùt = once the rain stopped. น้ำตาnáam-dtaa = tears, literally 'eye water'; ไหลlǎi = to flow. จนjon = until: จนไม่มีเหลืออยู่jon mâi mii lǔea yùu = until there was none left. Then, the next line says, he learned to get past defeat.
  3. เมื่อก่อน mûea-gàwnเคย koeiรัก rákมากเท่าไร mâak tâo-raiมัน manยังคง yang-kongรัก rákมากเท่านั้น mâak tâo-nán

However much I loved you before, I still love you just as much

The heart of the song: มากเท่าไรmâak tâo-rai … มากเท่านั้นmâak tâo-nán = however much…, just as much. เมื่อก่อนmûea-gàwn = in the past, before; with เคยkoei = used to: เมื่อก่อนเคยรักmûea-gàwn koei rák = I loved (you) before. ยังคงyang-kong = still. เท่าไรtâo-rai is the dictionary spelling of 'how much'; most people say and write เท่าไหร่tâo-rài. มันman (it) only fills the beat here.
  4. แต่ dtàeชีวิต chii-wítมัน manต้อง dtâwngเป็นไป bpen bpai

But life has to go on

ชีวิตchii-wít = life; ต้องdtâwng = must, has to. เป็นไปbpen bpai = to go on, to take its course: ชีวิตต้องเป็นไปchii-wít dtâwng bpen bpai = life must go on; ความเป็นไปkwaam bpen bpai = how things go, what is happening. A line worth knowing for comforting a friend after a breakup.
  5. รัก rákที่ tîiมัน manต้อง dtâwngจบ jòpแม้ว่า máe-wâaยังไง yang-ngaiมัน manก็ gâwยัง yangสวยงาม sǔay-ngaam

A love that had to end is still beautiful, no matter what

รักที่มันต้องจบrák tîi man dtâwng jòp = a love that had to end (จบjòp = to end, to finish). แม้ว่าmáe-wâa = even if, although; with ยังไงyang-ngai (how) it means 'no matter what'. ก็ยังgâw yang = (even so) still: มันก็ยังสวยงามman gâw yang sǔay-ngaam = it's still beautiful. สวยงามsǔay-ngaam is the fuller, written สวยsǔay (pretty).
  6. ถ้าหาก tâa-hàakย้อนคืน yáwn kuuenวันเวลา wan-wee-laaได้ dâiอีก ìikครั้ง kráng

If I could turn back time once more

ถ้าหากtâa-hàak = if, a fuller ถ้าtâa. ย้อนคืนyáwn kuuen = to turn back, to go back; วันเวลาwan-wee-laa = the days, time gone by. A verb + ได้dâi = can, could: ย้อนคืนวันเวลาได้yáwn kuuen wan-wee-laa dâi = could turn back time. อีกครั้งìik kráng = once more, again: พูดอีกครั้งได้ไหมpûut ìik kráng dâi mǎi = could you say that again?
  7. อย่างไร yàang-raiฉัน chǎnก็ gâwจะ jàยอม yawmให้ hâiเป็น bpenเหมือนเดิม mǔean-doem

No matter what, I'd let it all happen just the same

อย่างไรyàang-rai = how (the written ยังไงyang-ngai); before ก็gâw it means 'no matter what, anyway': อย่างไรฉันก็จะyàang-rai chǎn gâw jà… = whatever happens, I would… ยอมyawm = to be willing, to give in; ยอมให้yawm hâi = to let, to allow: ยอมให้เป็นเหมือนเดิมyawm hâi bpen mǔean-doem = let it be just as it was. Knowing how it ends, he would still love her again.

The culture behind it

Bodyslam is one of Thailand's most successful rock bands, fronted by singer Toon (Artiwara Kongmalai). "ความรักkwaam-rák" comes from their fifth album, ครามkraam ('Indigo', 2010), produced by Off of the band Big Ass on Genie Records, a GMM Grammy label; Toon wrote the music with Off, and the words with Kob of Big Ass and Po Posayanukul (Kob also wrote the words of LABANOON's "Magic Rope"). Thai Wikipedia sums the song up as a view of love that stays beautiful even after it has ended. Sixteen years after its release it was back near the top of Spotify Thailand's daily chart in 2026, peaking at number 3.

Toon is also a national figure beyond music: in 2017 he ran 2,215 km in 55 days, from Betong in the far south to Mae Sai in the far north, in the charity run ก้าวคนละก้าวgâao kon lá gâao ('one step each') and raised more than a billion baht for eleven hospitals.
