Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. แอบ àepไป bpaiกด gòtไลก์ láiใน naistory sà-dtaw-rîi

I secretly went and liked your story.

แอบàep + verb = to do something secretly. กดไลก์gòt lái = to press 'like' (กดgòt = to press, push). Thai social media talk borrows English freely: สตอรี่sà-dtaw-rîi (story), แชทcháet (chat), ไลฟ์lái (live).
  2. อยาก yàakจะ jàรู้ rúuเธอ toeชอบ châwpคน konแบบไหน bàep-nǎi

I want to know what kind of guy you like.

อยากyàak + verb (or อยากจะyàak jà + verb) = to want to. คนแบบไหนkon bàep-nǎi = what kind of person; ชอบคนแบบไหนchâwp kon bàep-nǎi is the classic dating question. In casual speech ว่าwâa ('that') is often dropped after รู้rúu.
  3. ก็ gâwคน konนี้ níiน่ะ nâตรง dtrongtype tái

Well, this one is exactly my type.

ตรงdtrong = straight, exact: ตรงไทป์dtrong tái / ตรงสเปกdtrong sà-bpèk = exactly my type. น่ะnâ marks the topic ('as for this one…'). ก็gâw at the start works like 'well…'.
  4. แต่ dtàeเธอ toeตอบ dtàwpมา maaว่า wâaเธอ toeไม่ mâiชอบ châwpคน konทรง songนี้ níi

But you replied that you don't like guys of this type.

ตอบมาว่าdtàwp maa wâa… = replied that… (มาmaa = back toward me). ทรงsong (shape, form) is slang for a person's look or vibe: คนทรงนี้kon song níi = this kind of guy. ผมทรงนี้pǒm song níi = this hairstyle.
  5. ทรง songอย่าง yàangแบด bàetแซด sáetอย่าง yàangบ่อย bàwy

Looks bad, but sad so often.

Slang from English: แบดbàet = bad (the 'bad boy' look), แซดsáet = sad. ทรงอย่างsong yàang… = looks like…; อย่างyàang + word = in a … way. บ่อยbàwy = often. People quote the line about anyone who looks tough but gets hurt easily.
  6. เธอ toeไม่ mâiอิน inกับ gàpผู้ชาย pûu-chaaibad bàetboy bawy

    You're not into bad-boy guys.

    อินin (from English 'in') = into something, emotionally invested: อินกับซีรีส์เกาหลีin gàp sii-rîi gao-lǐi = really into K-dramas; อินมากin mâak = totally feeling it. ผู้ชายpûu-chaai = man, guy.
  7. เธอ toeไม่ mâiรัก rákฉัน chǎnก็ gâwคง kongต้อง dtâwngปล่อย bplàwy

If you don't love me, I guess I'll have to let you go.

Thai often drops 'if' (ถ้าtâa): เธอไม่รักฉัน ก็toe mâi rák chǎn gâw… = (if) you don't love me, then… ก็gâw introduces the result. คงต้องkong dtâwng = will probably have to. ปล่อยbplàwy = to let go, release.
  8. ถ้า tâaเปลี่ยนใจ bplìan-jaiเธอ toeค่อย kâwyมา maaบอก bàwk

If you change your mind, come and tell me then.

เปลี่ยนใจbplìan-jai = to change your mind (เปลี่ยนbplìan = to change). ค่อยkâwy + verb = to do it then, later, when the time comes: ค่อยคุยกันkâwy kui gan = let's talk later. เธอtoe means both 'you' and 'she' in songs; here it's 'you'.

Grammar in this song

แอบàep + verb = to do secretly (แอบไปกดไลก์àep bpai gòt lái, แอบมองàep mawng, แอบชอบàep châwp). ค่อยkâwy + verb = to do it later, when the time is right: ค่อยมาบอกkâwy maa bàwk "tell me then", ค่อยคุยกันkâwy kui gan "let's talk later".

Thai often leaves out ถ้าtâa ("if") and lets ก็gâw carry the "then": เธอไม่รักฉัน ก็คงต้องปล่อยtoe mâi rák chǎn gâw kong dtâwng bplàwy "(if) you don't love me, then I'll probably have to let go". อย่างyàang + word describes manner, and the song plays with it: ทรงอย่างแบด แซดอย่างบ่อยsong yàang bàet sáet yàang bàwy.

The culture behind it

Paper Planes are a Bangkok pop-punk band fronted by HYE (Thanwa Ketsuwan, vocals) and SEN (Nakarin Khunpakdee, bass) on genie records, part of GMM Grammy. They say "ทรงอย่างแบดsong yàang bàet" came from real life: people judge them as bad boys from their tough look, while inside they are ordinary, soft-hearted guys. They wrote it in a single day, and it came out on 17 October 2022.

It then became a phenomenon among very young kids: videos of kindergarten classes shouting "ทรงอย่างแบด แซดอย่างบ่อยsong yàang bàet sáet yàang bàwy" at school, at the zoo and on playgrounds went viral, and Thai media nicknamed it "the national anthem of milk-tooth teens" (เพลงชาติวัยรุ่นฟันน้ำนมpleeng-châat wai-rûn fan-náam-nom). The song is also a showcase of how Thai absorbs English: แบดbàet, แซดsáet, อินin, ไลก์lái, สตอรี่sà-dtaw-rîi and ไทป์tái are all everyday Thai slang, pronounced with Thai tones.
