- รู้ rúuว่า wâaเสี่ยง sìangแต่ dtàeคง kongต้อง dtâwngขอ kǎwลอง lawng
I know it's risky, but I'll just have to try
The first sung words. รู้ว่าrúu wâa = to know (that). เสี่ยงsìang = risky, to take a risk. คงต้องkong dtâwng = will probably have to (คงkong = probably, ต้องdtâwng = must). ขอkǎw + verb = to ask to do something, let me…: ขอลองkǎw lawng = let me try (ลองlawng = to try), what you say before tasting someone's dish: ขอลองชิมหน่อยkǎw lawng chim nàwy = can I try a bit? - รู้ rúuว่า wâaเธอ toeอยู่ yùuไกล glaiอยู่ yùuสูง sǔungขนาดไหน kà-nàat nǎi
I know how far away and how high above me you are
อยู่yùu = to be (somewhere): อยู่ไกลyùu glai = to be far away, อยู่สูงyùu sǔung = to be high up. สูงsǔung = high, tall, and also high in rank: she is out of his league. ขนาดไหนkà-nàat nǎi = how much, how far, to what degree, after the words it measures: รักขนาดไหนrák kà-nàat nǎi = how much (I) love. - ไม่ว่า mâi wâaยังไง yang-ngaiจะ jàลองดี lawng-diiสักวัน sàk wan
No matter what, one day I'll dare to try my luck
ไม่ว่ายังไงmâi wâa yang-ngai = no matter what, whatever happens. ลองดีlawng-dii, from ลองlawng (to try) and ดีdii (good), = to dare, to test whether someone is really as strong as they say, usually as a challenge: the Royal Society's dictionary has someone daring a big-time gangster. Here he dares fate, and her. สักวันsàk wan = one day, some day. The label's sheet and the words on screen have จะjà (will) before ลองดีlawng-dii; it is sung fast, and some lyric sites print ก็gâw. - อยาก yàakรัก rákก็ gâwต้อง dtâwngเสี่ยง sìang
If you want to love, you have to take the risk
Thai often leaves out 'if': wish + ก็gâw + what it takes = if you want…, then…: อยากรักก็ต้องเสี่ยงyàak rák gâw dtâwng sìang = want love? then take the risk. The same shape works anywhere: อยากเก่งก็ต้องฝึกyàak gèng gâw dtâwng fùek = if you want to be good, you have to practise. เสี่ยงsìang = to take a risk, a chance. - ตกหลุมรัก dtòk lǔm rákจริงๆ jing-jing
I've really fallen in love
ตกหลุมรักdtòk lǔm rák = to fall in love, literally 'to fall into the pit of love' (ตกdtòk = to fall, หลุมlǔm = a hole, a pit). จริงๆjing-jing = really, truly: จริงjing (true) said twice, which makes it stronger. รักจริงrák jing = to love for real, true love. - ไม่ mâiผิด pìtใช่ไหม châi mǎiที่ tîiฉัน chǎnไม่ mâiเจียมตัว jiam-dtua
It's not wrong, is it, that I don't know my place?
ไม่ผิดใช่ไหมmâi pìt châi mǎi = it's not wrong, is it? ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi at the end asks the other person to agree. ที่tîi + clause = that…: ขอโทษที่มาสายkǎw-tôot tîi maa sǎai = sorry for being late. เจียมตัวjiam-dtua = to know your place, to keep modest about who you are, and ไม่เจียมตัวmâi jiam-dtua = to reach above yourself, which is just what he is doing.

The culture behind it
"เล่นของสูงlên kǎwng sǔung" came out on Seven, Big Ass's first album on Genie Records (July 2004), and became the band's signature song (Thai Wikipedia). Kob (Khajondet Phromraksa), the drummer, wrote the words, his first fast song, and Off (Poonsak Jaturaboon) the music, with an opening he wanted sung high (Sanook, 2019); the band's first singer, Daxx (Ekarat Wongchalard), sings it. KLEAR covered it in 2009 (their own hit is Kum Yin Dee), and so did New and Jiew in 2013. Kob also wrote Big Ass's Lom Plian Thit and LABANOON's Pae Thang, another man in love above his station.
The title is a Thai warning. ของสูงkǎwng sǔung, 'high things', are sacred things, a Buddha image or an amulet, and also people of high rank (the Royal Society's dictionary gives both): they are kept up high, and nobody steps over them. ของkǎwng on its own can mean a charm, an object believed to hold power (the same dictionary): amulets are worn for protection and luck, and some people turn to love charms, เสน่ห์sà-nèe, which the dictionary defines as a spell to make someone love you. To เล่นของสูงlên kǎwng sǔung is to meddle with what is above you, and saying อย่าเล่นของสูงyàa lên kǎwng sǔung warns that it can turn on you; the song uses the phrase for chasing a woman out of your league. The video ends with a short scene after the song, in which a man in army camouflage gives an order with the rough 'you', มึงmueng; the song itself is clean.
