How to use it

ทิศtít is a compass direction, and it comes before the direction's name: ทิศเหนือtít-nǔea, north, ทิศใต้tít-dtâi, south, ทิศตะวันออกtít dtà-wan-àwk, east, where the sun, ตะวันdtà-wan, comes out, and ทิศตะวันตกtít dtà-wan-dtòk, west, where it falls. Thais ask which way a house or a condo faces before they buy or rent: rooms facing north or east stay cooler. A compass is a เข็มทิศkěm-tít, a "direction needle". Direction in a wider sense, of the wind, a career or a company, is ทิศทางtít-taang, and the way to somewhere is ทางtaang.
