Thai splits "find" into two steps: หาhǎa, to look for, and เจอjoe, to come across. Together, หาเจอhǎa joe is finding after a search, and "I can't find it" puts ไม่mâi in the middle: หาไม่เจอhǎa mâi joe.
เจอjoe on its own is finding by chance, or meeting someone: เจอแมวในห้องน้ำjoe maew nai hâwng-náam, I found a cat in the bathroom. Formal Thai and the news say พบpóp.
