I see in Thai

“I see” in Thai is อ๋อǎw.

อ๋อ ǎw

oh, I see! (now I understand) interjection

  • ǎw rising
  • Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”

How to use it

อ๋อǎw, with a rising tone, is the sound of the penny dropping: "oh, I see!", "ah, right". It's one of the most frequent little words in Thai conversation, often followed by เข้าใจแล้วkâo-jai láew, got it, or เหรอrǒe, really? While someone is talking, Thais show they're listening with a soft ครับkráp or ค่ะkâ.
