Kite in Thai

“Kite” in Thai is ว่าวwâao.

ว่าว wâao

kite noun

  • wâao falling
  • Falling: start high and drop clearly, like a firm “No!”

How to use it

ว่าวwâao, with a falling tone, is a kite, and flying one is เล่นว่าวlên wâao, "play kite". The windy weeks of the hot season are kite time, and Bangkok's Sanam Luang has a long tradition of kite contests between a big star-shaped "male" kite and a small, quick "female" one. Say เล่นว่าวlên wâao: the old phrase ชักว่าวchák wâao, "pull a kite", is now also rude slang.
