result, outcome; effect noun
- pǒn rising
- Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”
How to use it
ผลpǒn is the result of anything: a medical test (ผลตรวจpǒn dtrùat), an exam (ผลสอบpǒn sàwp), a football match or an election. When something works, Thais say it ได้ผลdâi pǒn, "gets results": a medicine, a diet, a trick for learning tones. Something that has an effect on something else มีผลmii pǒn.
The same word means fruit in formal Thai, which is why fruit in general is ผลไม้pǒn-lá-máai, "tree fruit".
