Road in Thai

“Road” in Thai is ถนนtà-nǒn.

ถนน tà-nǒn

road, street noun

  • tà low
  • nǒn rising
  • Low: flat and lower than your normal voice, dropping a little at the end.
  • Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”

Classifier: สายsǎai · line, route (bus or train line)

How to use it

ถนนtà-nǒn is any road or street, and it comes first in street names: Sukhumvit Road is ถนนสุขุมวิทtà-nǒn sù-kǔm-wít. The smaller lanes off a main road are ซอยsawy.

Traffic drives on the left in Thailand, so look right first when you cross, and don't count on cars stopping at a zebra crossing. Roads are counted with สายsǎai, the word for a line.
