You can get anywhere in Thailand with a handful of phrases. Start with ไปbpai + place: ไปสนามบินbpai sà-nǎam-bin (to the airport), ไปบีทีเอสอโศกbpai bii-tii-ét à-sòok (to Asok BTS station). Then steer: เลี้ยวซ้ายlíaw sáai (turn left), เลี้ยวขวาlíaw kwǎa (turn right), ตรงไปdtrong bpai (straight on) and จอดตรงนี้jàwt dtrong-níi (stop here). Add หน่อยnàwy or a polite particle and it sounds friendly rather than bossy.
Grab and Bolt have made taxis easier, but drivers still call to check where you are, so อยู่หน้าเซเว่นyùu nâa see-wên ("I'm in front of the 7-Eleven") is worth knowing. In Chiang Mai the red songthaews (รถแดงrót daeng) work like shared taxis: tell the driver where you're going before you get in, and check the price for longer trips.
To find anything, use อยู่ที่ไหนyùu tîi-nǎi ("where is…?"). ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหนhâwng-náam yùu tîi-nǎi, "where's the bathroom?", might be the most useful sentence in this whole section.
