Thai time words

9 phrases with audio · male and female forms

Thai verbs never change for tense, so time words do the work. วันนี้wan-níi (today), พรุ่งนี้prûng-níi (tomorrow) and เมื่อวานmûea-waan (yesterday) usually go at the start or end of the sentence: พรุ่งนี้ไปเชียงใหม่prûng-níi bpai chiang-mài, "(I'm) going to Chiang Mai tomorrow."

Small words add the rest: แล้วláew (already, done), ยังyang (still, not yet), จะjà (will) and เพิ่งpôeng (just). ตอนนี้dtawn-níi is "now", and เดี๋ยวdǐaw is "in a moment", the stretchiest word in Thai: เดี๋ยวมาdǐaw maa can mean back in a minute or back in an hour.

Thai time is relaxed but not careless. Dinner at seven may start at half past, while a temple ceremony or a meeting with your landlord starts on time. For clock times, spoken Thai uses its own six-hour system, explained on our telling-the-time page.
