Thai shopping phrases
18 phrases with audio · male and female forms
Two words carry most shopping conversations: อันนี้an níi (this one) and เท่าไหร่tâo-rài (how much). Point, ask อันนี้เท่าไหร่an níi tâo-rài, and listen for the number before บาทbàat. The numbers are the hard part, so learn them early (see our Thai numbers page).
At markets, gentle bargaining is normal: ลดได้ไหมlót dâi mǎi ("can you lower it?") with a smile works better than a hard haggle, and แพงไปpaeng bpai ("too expensive") is fine if you say it lightly. In malls, supermarkets and 7-Eleven, prices are fixed. If you only want to look, ดูก่อนduu gàwn ("just looking for now") lets you walk on politely.
Paying has changed fast. Many stalls show a PromptPay QR code, so if you have a Thai banking app, สแกนได้ไหมsà-gaen dâi mǎi ("can I scan?") is as useful as cash. At the 7-Eleven counter you'll hear รับถุงไหมráp tǔng mǎi or ใส่ถุงไหมsài tǔng mǎi: do you want a bag?
