Thai food phrases

27 phrases with audio · male and female forms

Most of your Thai will happen over food. At a street stall or a ร้านตามสั่งráan dtaam sàng (made-to-order kitchen) you only need a few patterns: เอาao + dish ("I'll have…"), ขอkǎw + thing + หน่อยnàwy ("could I have…"), and the life-saver ไม่เผ็ดmâi pèt, not spicy. If you can take a little heat, เผ็ดนิดหน่อยpèt nít-nàwy is a good middle ground.

Listen for the vendor's questions too: กินที่นี่หรือกลับบ้านgin tîi-nîi rǔue glàp bâan ("eat here or take away?") and เผ็ดไหมpèt mǎi ("spicy?"). When you're done, tell the cook it was อร่อยมากà-ràwy mâak, tell your host อิ่มแล้วìm láew ("I'm full"), and ask for the bill with เช็คบิลchék bin or เก็บเงินด้วยgèp ngoen dûay.

Thais eat together and share: dishes go in the middle, everyone takes a little at a time, and you eat with a spoon in your right hand, using the fork only to push food onto it.
