Soi in Thai

Soi, ซอยsawy, is a side street or lane that branches off a main road.

ซอย sawy

soi, side street (usually numbered) noun

  • sawy mid
  • Mid: level, in your normal speaking voice.

How to use it

Main roads in Thai cities have numbered sois: on Sukhumvit Road, odd numbers run along one side and even numbers along the other, so Soi 11 is on the opposite side of the road from Soi 12. Bigger sois have their own sub-sois.

The entrance of a soi, where the motorbike taxis wait, is ปากซอยbpàak sawy, "the mouth of the soi", and its far end is ท้ายซอยtáai sawy. The dogs that live in every soi are หมาจรmǎa jawn, soi dogs.
