How to use it

ใจหายjai-hǎai, "the heart goes missing", is the sudden drop inside when something you love comes to an end: a friend moving away, a favourite shop closing down, the last day of school, a year gone by too fast. Thais say it out loud, ใจหายเลยjai-hǎai loei, where English might say "oh, that's sad". It's also the jolt of a fright: ใจหายวาบjai-hǎai wâap is your heart skipping a beat. Plain sadness is เศร้าsâo.
