Unit 7 · Lesson 3 · Pattern
Telling a driver where to go
One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.
How it works
1 Where to: go + place
To say where you're going, put the place straight after ไปbpai (go). There's no word for 'to': ไปสุขุมวิทbpai sù-kǔm-wít (to Sukhumvit), ไปสถานีอโศกbpai sà-tǎa-nii à-sòok (to Asok station). With your polite particle, that's all a taxi driver needs to hear.
มาmaa (come) is for movement towards the speaker: บอสมารับbáwt maa ráp (Boss is coming to pick me up). To ask the way, add ยังไงyang-ngai (how) at the end: ไปวัดพระแก้วยังไงbpai wát-prá-gâew yang-ngai.
- ไป bpaiสุขุมวิท sù-kǔm-wítครับ kráp
To Sukhumvit, please.
Men ไปสุขุมวิทครับ Women ไปสุขุมวิทค่ะ
- บอส báwtมา maaรับ ráp
Boss is coming to pick me up.
- ไป bpaiสถานี sà-tǎa-niiอโศก à-sòokยังไง yang-ngaiครับ kráp
How do I get to Asok station?
Men ไปสถานีอโศกยังไงครับ Women ไปสถานีอโศกยังไงคะ
2 Instructions are just verbs
Thai instructions are bare verbs, with no word for 'please': the polite particle at the end does that job. For 'slow down', just say 'slowly, a bit': ช้าๆ หน่อยcháa-cháa nàwy.
- เลี้ยว líawซ้าย sáaiครับ kráp
Turn left, please.
Men เลี้ยวซ้ายครับ Women เลี้ยวซ้ายค่ะ
- จอด jàwtตรงนี้ dtrong-níiครับ kráp
Stop right here, please.
Men จอดตรงนี้ครับ Women จอดตรงนี้ค่ะ
| English | Thai |
|---|---|
| Go straight on | ตรงไปdtrong bpai |
| Turn left | เลี้ยวซ้ายlíaw sáai |
| Turn right | เลี้ยวขวาlíaw kwǎa |
| Slow down a bit | ช้าๆ หน่อยcháa-cháa nàwy |
| Stop right here | จอดตรงนี้jàwt dtrong-níi |
3 Making it friendly
A bare instruction with ครับkráp or ค่ะkâ is fine, but Thais usually soften it a little:
- หน่อยnàwy (a bit): จอดตรงนี้หน่อยjàwt dtrong-níi nàwy
- ด้วยdûay (please): เลี้ยวซ้ายด้วยlíaw sáai dûay
- นะná (friendly 'okay?'): ไปกันนะbpai gan ná
- ช่วยchûay + verb (+ หน่อยnàwy) for 'could you…': ช่วยจอดตรงนี้หน่อยchûay jàwt dtrong-níi nàwy
And กันgan at the end turns a plan into 'let's': ไปกันbpai gan (let's go).
- ช่วย chûayจอด jàwtตรงนี้ dtrong-níiหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp
Could you stop right here, please?
Men ช่วยจอดตรงนี้หน่อยครับ Women ช่วยจอดตรงนี้หน่อยค่ะ
- เลี้ยว líawซ้าย sáaiด้วย dûayครับ kráp
Turn left, please.
Men เลี้ยวซ้ายด้วยครับ Women เลี้ยวซ้ายด้วยค่ะ
- ไป bpaiกัน ganนะ ná
Let's go, okay?
Tips
- •Point and say ตรงนี้dtrong-níi: a gesture plus one word works with every driver.
- •Tell a taxi driver your destination through the window before you get in: ไปสุขุมวิทbpai sù-kǔm-wít + your particle. If he nods, hop in.
- •Not sure which softener to use? ช่วยchûay … หน่อยnàwy is polite with anyone.
